Are these real/historical ciphers?

Yes - all 18 ciphers and encoding schemes have real origins. Caesar Cipher dates to ancient Rome (58 BC), Atbash is found in the Hebrew Bible, Vigenère was called 'le chiffre indéchiffrable' and considered unbreakable for 300 years, the Polybius Square comes from ancient Greece, and Morse Code was used in telegraphy since 1837. Modern encoding standards (Base64, Hex, Octal, Binary, URL Encoding) are used daily in software development.

Can anyone decode my message without the key?

It depends on the cipher. Simple ciphers (Caesar, ROT13, Atbash, A1Z26) are trivially reversible by anyone who knows the method. Vigenère is harder but breakable without the keyword using statistical attacks. The encoding standards (Base64, Binary, Hex, URL, Morse) are NOT encryption - they are just different data representations, reversible by anyone. For private communication, use proper encryption tools, not classical ciphers.

What parameters do I need to decode a message?

Caesar Cipher requires the exact same shift number (1–25). Vigenère requires the exact same keyword. Rail Fence requires the same number of rails. ROT13, ROT47, Atbash, and Reverse Text are self-inverse - no parameters needed. All encoding standards (Base64, Binary, Hex, Octal, Morse, A1Z26, NATO, Polybius, URL) need no key to decode.

Can I chain multiple ciphers together?

Yes - after encoding your text, click the Swap button (↕) to move the output to the input field. Then switch to a different cipher and encode again. Repeat to stack as many ciphers as you want. To decode a chained message, apply the ciphers in reverse order.

Why can't Leet Speak be decoded?

Leet Speak is lossy - multiple different letters map to the same symbol (for example, both 'I' and 'L' become '1', and both 'A' and nothing become '4'). There is no unambiguous way to reverse it automatically. You can always read Leet Speak visually - just interpret the numbers as the letters they resemble.

A cipher (Caesar, Vigenère, Atbash, Rail Fence, Polybius) is designed to obscure meaning and typically requires a key or knowledge of the method to reverse. An encoding (Base64, Binary, Hex, Octal, Morse, URL) is a standardised way to represent data in a different format - it is not designed to hide meaning and can be decoded by anyone who knows the encoding standard.

No. All encoding and decoding runs 100% in your browser using JavaScript. Your messages are never sent to or stored on any server. You can even use the tool offline once the page is loaded.

What is the Polybius Square?

The Polybius Square is a 5×5 grid of letters (I and J share one cell) where each letter is represented by its row and column number. 'A' is at row 1, column 1 → '11'. 'Z' is at row 5, column 5 → '55'. It was invented by the Greek historian Polybius around 150 BC and used as an early form of telegraphy by holding torches.
