The standard rule is to bury one-third of the post length. For a 6 ft fence, use an 8 ft post buried 2 ft in concrete. Posts should extend below the frost line in cold climates.

One 50-60 lb bag of fast-setting concrete is standard for a typical 4×4 inch post hole (roughly 12 inches wide and 24 inches deep).
