Meta tags are the small snippets of HTML that tell search engines and social platforms what your page is about. Get them right and you earn more clicks from the same ranking. Here's everything that actually matters in 2025.

The Title Tag

The title tag is the single most important on-page SEO element. It's the clickable headline in search results and the label on a browser tab.

  • Keep it roughly 50–60 characters so it isn't truncated in search.
  • Put your primary keyword near the front.
  • Make every title unique across your site.
  • Write for humans first - a compelling title earns clicks even from lower positions.

The Meta Description

The meta description doesn't directly affect rankings, but it's your ad copy in the search results. A strong description dramatically improves click-through rate.

  • Aim for 140–160 characters.
  • Include the keyword naturally - matched terms are bolded in results.
  • Lead with the benefit and end with a reason to click.

If you don't write a meta description, Google generates one from your page - often awkwardly. Always write your own.

Open Graph & Twitter Cards

Open Graph (OG) tags control how your link looks when shared on social platforms - the title, description, and preview image. Without them, shared links look broken and get ignored.

<meta property="og:title" content="..." />
<meta property="og:description" content="..." />
<meta property="og:image" content="https://.../preview.png" />
  • Use a preview image around 1200×630px for the best display.
  • Keep OG titles and descriptions concise and benefit-driven.
  • Add Twitter Card tags (`twitter:card`, `twitter:title`) for X previews.

Putting It Together

Audit your existing pages with the Meta Tag Checker, generate share-ready tags with the Open Graph Generator, and make sure your content actually targets its keyword using the Keyword Density Checker.

Meta tags help search engines understand your page, but great content is what keeps readers there. Treat tags as the invitation, not the whole party.
